The metal heads of Hair Supply aren’t the first to make great rock out of nothing at all. An underheard band called Funland used to do a fine medley of two big Air Supply hits, nicely saluting the hysteria that lies beneath radio’s most infamous vanilla pop. The duo certainly managed a melodic economy worthy of the first big post-punk lite-rock act. They even managed to get members of the E-Street Band to back them, which wasn’t bad for a band not even signed to the Columbia label.
Anyway, Hair Supply shows proper respect by delivering more than you’d expect from that obvious pun of a name. These moonlighting members of Satanicide hammer out the hits with an intensity that frees their audience from feeling like a bunch of smug hipsters. Nowadays, that’s the greatest love of all. And since the opening act’s Rene Risque, you won’t have to worry about an excess of sentimentality.
