EITHER, OR ...

Wednesday, November 8,2006

One small victory for Helena Stone marked one major victory for the transgender community last week. Stone, a 70-year-old transgender woman, brought suit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority after she was arrested three times for using the women’s bathroom at Grand Central. The MTA dropped all criminal charges against Stone, a phone technician formerly known as Henry McGuinness, and paid her $2,000 legal fees. The ruling resulting from Stone’s case now permits transgender people to use either bathroom—men’s or women’s—depending on the gender with which they identify. We’d like to suggest identifying with whichever bathroom line is shorter.
