Cheap Eats

Yolato

Wednesday, April 11,2007
Nutritious ice cream?  Sounds like an oxymoron, but thanks to Italy’s newest import, Yolato, you can have your cake and eat it, too—except it’s frozen and not really cake. This tiny East Village parlor, marked by its oversized orange sign, holds some of the most delicious blends of yogurt and gelato in Manhattan. With its wall-to-wall windows overlooking vintage shops and secluded bars, it’s the ideal spot for those seeking refuge from NYU preps. You’ll be greeted immediately and guided in selecting gelato, frozen yogurt, sorbet or green tea lattes. All 24 flavors of this creamy treat are low in carbs and fat- and sugar-free no matter which you choose. Feel free to lick a sample or two as friendly artisans scoop oozing nutella or forest berries into a disposable cup. From almond to tiramisu, Yolato has a flavor for every neurotic New Yorker. It’s not only made in front of you, but it’s made with the freshest fruits, such as ripened mangos or lychee. Tempted chocoholics on a diet will find satisfaction in real swirls of Hersheys and a rich texture that only churners with know-how can make. If gelato ($3.99) isn’t cool enough for you, try their freshly baked crepes ($5.96), made with traditional batter, overflowing with sliced fruit of your choice. Although you’ll get less bang for your buck in terms of portions, Yolato will help you fit into those skinny jeans again without suffering any deprivation.
