It’s hard to break into the world of musical comedy. Just ask Hard ‘N’ Phirm, aka Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman, who make a rare appearance at the UCB Theater this week. What distinguishes Hard ‘N’ Phirm from their peers is that their music is more satire than parody. “We’re definitely more in the satire camp. We write our own stuff and we tend to make fun of styles or ideas more than specific songs. Either way, we’re plain-clothed clowns, when you get right down to it. With a dash of whore.”
It’s this unique and hilarious approach that’s landed Hard ‘N’ Phirm positions writing short films for the likes of Film Roman, who produce “The Simpsons,” and Turner Broadcasting’s Superdeluxe.com. “The shorts for Super D revolve around the idea that Country Music Television has a PBS type channel. It’ll basically be a bunch of country songs about things like science, math and culture.”
And if music reflects the culture of the day, what does the state of today’s music say about our world? “We’re not sure,” say Hard ‘N’ Phirm, “but judging by the current culture I’d say that the music of today is very fat.”
