Speed Reads: June's literary landscape at a glance

By Jeff Cretan

99 Drams of Whiskey
By Kate Hopkins, Out Now
Booze blogger Hopkins goes on a trip to explore the whiskey made in Ireland, Scotland and the United States while tossing in the history of the water of life along the way.
To Sound in the Know: Hopkins blogs about all things alcohol related at The Accidental Hedonist.

Shop Class as Soulcraft
By Matthew B. Crawford, Out Now
The PhD turned bike mechanic pens a quasi-self-help, philosophical polemic on the tangible and psychological value of working with your hands in a world of cubicles and instant-message meetings.
To Sound in the Know: While Crawford does run his own small bike shop, he’s also a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia.  So this grease monkey isn’t all hands.

In the Kitchen
By Monica Ali, Out June 16
The young Brit’s newest offering throws readers into the fire and chaos of a restaurant’s kitchen, mixes in a dash of death, relationship drama and illicit business shenanigans.
To Sound in the Know: Ali was named one of the 20 best young British novelists by Granta before she had ever published a novel.  If only we could all be rewarded for stuff we haven’t done yet.

The Tall Book
By Arianne Cohen, Out June 16
Six-foot three-inch Cohen explores the world of the tall in this humorous and illustrative exploration of what life is like for those with their heads in the clouds.
To Sound in the Know: While writing this book, Cohen met her partner… who is 7’2”!  Their children will lord over all of us.

Trouble
By Kate Christensen, Out June 16
The author of the award-winning novel The Great Man returns with this story of two female friends in their 40s who shun their frustrating, lovelorn lives for a trip to Mexico City where they drink themselves toward self-awareness, swine flu be damned.
To Sound in the Know: The Great Man made Christensen only the fifth woman to win the PEN/Faulkner in the award’s near 30-year history.

Let the Great World Spin
By Colum McCann, Out June 23
McCann uses Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the Twin Towers as a launching point in this patchwork of stories about a
wide-ranging cast of characters in 1970s New York.
To Sound in the Know: While known mostly for his fiction, McCann also penned an Oscar-nominated short film called Everything in This Country Must. Double threat!

Drift
By Victoria
Patterson,
Out June 25
This short story collection runs along a line of crumbling lives in Newport Beach, from wealthy wives to struggling waiters to alienated teens.  This isn’t Josh Schwarz’s OC.
To Sound in the Know: Patterson grew up in Newport and now teaches
writing at the University of California-Riverside, so the lady knows her
Southern California.
