Why Won’t You Let Me Be Great?
Aug. 1, PS 122, 150 1st Ave. (at E. 9th St.); 8, $20
A group of downtown choreographers present work based on Kanye West’s album 808’s and Heartbreak. Could be great; could be the sort of irony-laden appropriation of minority culture that is, to the ears of many thoughtful folks, nails on a chalkboard. Hopefully, with a line-up that includes the Varsity Interpretive Dance Squad, Kenny Mellman and Neal Medlyn, it will eschew the cheap laughs of the latter for the transcendence of the former.
Bottom Line: It’s a good album anyway, so if you don’t like the dance, just close your eyes.
