Calypso Rose
Roots of American Music Festival
Aug. 23, Damrosch Park Bandshell, West 62nd St. betw. Columbus & Amsterdam Aves.; 4, FREE
If ethnomusicologists Harry Smith or Alan Lomax were alive today, they’d be at Lincoln Center on Sunday for a meeting of disparate but uniformly spectacular bands who have all contributed and have been influenced by American folk music. The free event features an homage to Odetta, Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Eartha Kitt, an all-star tribute to Tex-Mex legend Doug Sahm and a performance of the legendary Latin-Jewish record Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos.
Bottom Line: Like a Smithsonian record but live and free.
