Maria Hassabi’s Solo
Sept. 30 through Oct. 4, PS 122, 150 1st Ave. (at E. 9th St.), 212-477-5829; 7:30, $20
Dark, lithe and cool, Maria Hassabi may be the Jean-Paul Belmondo of modern dance. There’s some Julia Kristeva in her too; and in Solo, she dwells, through her sweeping ugly elegant flailing, on representations of women. In November, she’ll unveil Soloshow in association with Performa, which examines the woman in Maria Hassabi context of show culture.
Bottom Line: Onewoman shows depend on the charisma of the woman. Maria Hassabi, thankfully, is lousy with it.
