“B 12,” redheaded hostess Chevonne, who will be performing at the New Year’s Eve Black & White Ball at the Chelsea Art Museum, called out from the stage, picking out the number from the spinning contraption. “G 47!” I paid $5 for six cards, which were laid out neatly next to a green highlighter, thanks to regular Mark Schulte, sitting beside me near the front. Bingo is no longer just for the geriatric, chain-smoking crowd over at the Knights of Columbus. You can play bingo right here in New York City at that classic gay bar, Pieces on Christopher Street. But this isn’t just any bingo—we’re talking Porno Bingo!
The man responsible for Porno Bingo is Will Clark, a mild-mannered philanthropist whose dream was to combine dirty movies with charity. “We raise funds for LGBT non-profits, we give out porn, what could be more fun?” he asked. Porno Bingo is held every Wednesday from 8 to 10 and there’s no cover. “Cheap drinks and cheaper men,” the flyer promises.
Every week, prizes, which generally include porn DVDs, sex toys and other erotic swag, are donated and the money collected from the games—generally $500 or so— benefits charities including Braking the
Cycle, Sylvia’s Place, Bailey’s House and New York’s Bear Den. Clark entices performers who are either singers or porn stars, so far snagging the likes of Michael Brandon, Robert Van Damme, Matthew Rush, Mike Dreyden and Broadway performer-turned-porn star Tom Judson (formerly Gus Mattox). “We’ve been asking Kathy Griffin,” said Clark, “but no word yet.”
Just as I settled in with my cards, a man from the back called out, “Porno Bingo!” and ran to the front of the room to collect his prize—$146 and a DVD of Men of Israel.
