The Cutting Edge: Museum of Natural History Opens Ice Rink

When you think about the Museum of Natural History, your probably shudder at the thought of three (or more) things: The Upper West Side, whiny kids and old stuff crammed into one place that hasn’t changed much since the first time you went.

But, this weekend, the 140-year-old museum is attempting to win back the hearts of New Yorkers by opening its first ice skating rink—dubbed the Polar Rink —on Saturday. Awkwardly enough, skaters can glide across the synthetic ice as the rink’s namesake, a 17-foot-tall stainless steel polar bear decked out in holiday lights that has permanent residency in the center of the rink.

Two good things that could come of this opening: Hot chocolate waiting for you at North Galleria next door and Chelsea’s Ice Theater of New York, which will be performing at the grand opening. Come on, cocoa and pretty people in artic-themed costumes picturesquely gliding around a huge steel polar bear? What’s not to love! Well, maybe if you put some Bailey’s in the hot chocolate things would be a little more entertaining. Just a thought.
