Lily Allen Brings The Fear

Britain’s potty-mouthed popstress Lily Allen returns today with the digital release of “The Fear,” the first single off of her upcoming sophomore album “It’s Not Me, It’s You”. The song, which leaked earlier this summer as “I Don’t Know,” mines similar terrain as Allen’s previous songs “Everything’s Just Wonderful” and “Cheryl Tweedy” in mocking society’s obsession with fame, fortune and fabulous living.

Sporting some of Allen’s typically biting lyrics, such as the deliciously dry couplet “I want lots of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds/ I hear people die while they’re trying to find them,” “Fear” finds Allen reteaming with producer Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee) for a modern electropop sound. The video, which matches the song’s shimmery sounds with surreal images of the fancy life: dancing presents and pastel balloons in a dreamy landscape where instead of hanging your teddy bear out to dry on the clothesline outside your trailer, your teddy bear has its own car in your plush crib.Though to be honest, chorus-boy servants and a topiary garden spelling out your name sounds fantastic to me.
