There's always something bittersweet about reunions, whether they're of the high-school variety or of bands facing down their 10 or 20 year anniversaries. Today has found announcements that Pavement might be returning to the sage and that The Slits are headed back into the studio.
Sure, both Stephen Malkmus and Ari Up are both completely caught up in their own mythologies and have managed to hold onto fame far longer than artists who might deserve it more, but if I made "Slanted and Enchanted" or "Cut," I would probably be the exact same way.
And while there's something quarter-life-crisisy about all of these '90s bands revisiting the heady days of flannel and drunkenly making out with the Deal sisters, who isn't guilty of wanting to revisit the past once in a while. After all, these are more than records or bands—when you've known them for 20 years they're like sort of obnoxious friends who are really fun to drive with.
Check out the video for Pavement's "Cut Yr Hair" and remember the days you spent wondering exactly why Juliana Hatfield wasn't giving it up to Evan Dando.
