In a slew of closings this week, East Village Cajun fixture Old Devil Moon is officially shuttering after over a decade in the business.
While this is a shame and for some idealists, the "passing of an era," we're more concerned to know about what's going to happen to Masturbakers, the erotic cake and pastry emporium housed by Old Devil Moon. In a town obsessed with cupcakes, these were some of the best. And the frosting boobies on top didn't hurt.
As nobody at the restaurant answered our phone calls all day, we went to check out what the deal was last night before hitting up a dive bar, another endangered East Village species.
Upon entering, this reporter came across a very Brady moment, where the owner and her family—including two sisters, husband and two infants—were tucking into some Cajun cuisine at a booth, perhaps one of the last meals the restaurant will ever serve (already closed to customers, the restaurant was empty but the decor intact).
Tami, the owner told me that the restaurant is finished, but Masturbakers is going to continue on and they're currently looking for a new space, although they're in a temporary hiatus. While Masturbakers has a future, Old Devil Moon has seen its last days. Tami has twin infants (Islay and Skye) to take care of. But she did inform me that former regulars of the restaurant are going to take over and create a new eatery using local produce and sustainable methods.
