Vacuous commercialism? Mass manipulation? Bright lights?
Times Square always says yes, yes and yes to all three—but all of a sudden, the neon oasis has developed a bit of a heart.
The 10-foot sculpture weighs in at 2 tons (heavy heart, no?) and a LED lighting system makes the structure constantly change colors from pink to red to purple, “across robot-carved shelves of horizontal luminescent acrylic” no less.
The stainless steel sculpture is officially unveiled on Friday but yesterday snap-happy tourists couldn’t get enough of a few poses in front of the heart-shaped piece.
The designers, Gage/Clemenceau Architects do seem to have a fascination with all things delicate and decadent. Have a peek at their golden love-in for a proposed sculpture at MoMa’s PS1 here.
