THE TRACE: An Exhibit of Student Photos

Recently reopened after a two-year renovation, La Galleria at La MaMa presents its third annual educational exhibition THE TRACE. This exhibit offers a rare opportunity for young artists at The Cooper Union to showcase their photo-based projects in a public setting.

Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s quote, “To live is to leave traces,” the purpose of this exhibit is to use photography as a poetic means to leave physical remains of selfhood, history, space, and psychology.

Some expected highlights from this year’s exhibit include a whimsical photo of floating Dunkin’ Donut bag balloons by student Chris Bowman. Another featured photo pictures two telephones sprawled atop an illusive zebra rug taken by Danny Willis.

Cooper Union has been alma mater to artists such as Leslie Hewitt, Pedro Lasch, Yuri Masnyj and Matthew Monahan, to name a few.

The opening reception will be Friday, April 24th. The exhibit will run through May 8, 2009. For more information, visit: www.cooper.edu or www.lamama.org.
