McCaig Welles Gallery’s newest exhibit, titled Queens Arrive, opens today at the Williamsburg gallery. This series features select international female artists or “matriarchs” in the line of graffiti.  The exhibit includes a range of media from photography to paintings on canvas. Works on display are created by a group of 16 or so artists from all around the world and, of course, with crazy graffiti artist names—Femme 9, Claw Money, EGR and Zore4, just to name a few.

“The gallery has shown graffiti artists for almost ten years now. INDIE 184 is a graffiti artist we’ve worked with for some time. The owner of the gallery approached INDIE to do the show, and she decided to feature all female artists from around the world,” said Megan Hays, the gallery's assistant director.

The exhibit will be curated by one of its own featured artists, INDIE 184 who comes from Washington Heights. As a New York native, she is no stranger to the graffiti culture in and around the city. Her graffiti was featured in Grand Theft Auto IV’s video game and current endeavors include the creation of her own street wear brand Kweenz Destory, freelance design work, and the occasional marketing/branding consultations. Her expertise is expected to produce a well-curated show tonight.

According to the gallery, among the featured work, viewers should be on the look out for Claw Money’s paintings on canvas and Fafi’s prints, both of which have been receiving exceptional attention.

Some of the other artists have more international backgrounds, hailing from Germany, Paris, Brazil, Australia, and Puerto Rico, so you’ll see the global gamut of street art. Separately, all artists have wide and diverse backgrounds in design and other industries such as disc jockeying and music production.
