Although it may seem that Brooklyn-based designers are a dime a dozen, it wasn't always the case. Ten years ago, the idea of a self-sustaining, Brooklyn-based design community seemed impossible. And yet Bklyn Designs, an annual design show originally started by the Chamber of Commerce, is entering its 7th year in force tomorrow, opening in a Dumbo location.
Previously created to increase interest in the borough, the show has become a "high profile event," with 45 exhibitors displaying their contemporary furnishings, lighting, accessories, and other wares to local and international attendees. Now a helpful soapbox for new local designers, the neighborhoods in this borough closest to Manhattan are chock full of design studios and boutiques—especially in Williamsburg, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus and Red Hook, to name a few.
