As summer gets into gear, there are a host of City cinematic events worth seeing during Memorial Weekend, including a bunch of special screenings with in-person actors, directors and monks galore!
The Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center has a Steve McQueen festival this weekend, with showings of classics like The Great Escape on Sunday and Monday evening and The Magnificent Seven on Saturday and Tuesday afternoon. As an added incentive, actor Robert Vaughn will be introducing Seven on Saturday.
If you feel like extending your weekend an extra day and spending a few extra bucks, go to the Bullitt screening on Tuesday evening, which includes a pre-film party and introduction from director Peter Yates.
Film Forum has a couple of interesting film events this weekend. A restored print of Dr. Strangelove is playing all weekend, and Strangelove is always worth viewing. Plus, if the atomic bomb comedy leaves you craving more Kubrick, head over the to the IFC for midnight screenings of Eyes Wide Shut all weekend. Also at Film Forum is a new doc called Burma VJ about underground video journalists who broadcast the country's protests to the world. There will be a Q&A with some monks after the 8 p.m. Friday showing (monks are film experts, apparently).
To wrap things up, 92Y, as part of the Cinema Tropical music film series, is screening the documentary La Gata (The Cat) about singer María Angélica Milán and tango music, and diretor Julianne Gage will be present for a Q&A session after the New York premier of her film.
Happy watching!
