I don’t get it. Is Fox's new show Glee really that great? Sure, there are funny lines here and there and everything Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) says is hilarious, but the rest of the show is flat-out uninteresting. Well, New York Post’s “Pop Wrap” blog, like everyone else, loves the show. They were super excited about some new unseen footage that has recently been released.
Here’s my take on the show: it’s full of overdone stereotypes, easy jokes, familiar plot lines and awkward romances. Its saving graces are the musical scenes and, once again, Jane Lynch. Some say that Glee is clearly parodying the over-the-top nature of high school films/TV shows, but I don’t see that as the case at all. I think Glee is just another addition to this overcrowded genre. The show isn’t smart enough to really comment on the issues it apparently wants to. Glee, then, is kind of parodying itself. While some characters are clearly made to not be as cookie-cutter as you might expect from this genre, I just feel like I've seen this show a hundred times before. Charming? In my view, no.
