Former Mayor Ed Koch remains enigmatic about his sexuality—often quoted as saying, "I do not want to add to the acceptability of asking every candidate,
‘Are you straight or gay or lesbian?’ and make it a legitimate
question, so I don’t submit to that question. I don’t care if people
think I’m gay because I don’t answer it. I’m flattered that at 84
people are interested in my sex life — and, it’s quite limited.”—but he turns up year after year at the annual Pride Parade in the Village (here pictured in 2007). With the news that Koch is set to have a heart operation in the next few days, we worry he won't be able to make it to the 40th annual Stonewall celebration.
But you never know with ol' Koch. He's always full of surprises. He wrote a column for us for a little while. And has already inscribed his tombstone (the plot is up in Trinity Church Cemetery in Washington Heights). But we want to have the man around as long as possible. Here's hoping the operation is a complete success and Mr. Koch makes a full and quick recovery.
