For the inaugural installment in his Record Club project, Beck has
released a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning." It's a
deeply satisfying interpretation.Beck's version has all the lethargy and anxiety of the original, but with a fuller, slower, Beckier sound. It's quite beautiful, really. He's pared down the xylophone, funked up the kick drum, laid on more tambourine, thrown in some cello and chilled out the whole thing.
Beck seems a bit less bitter than Lou Reed, but then, that makes sense: Beck's life kicks ass. Whereas Lou Reed seems to say, "Isn't it hilarious that I'm such a fuck up," Beck is like, "I'm depressed but I'm also fucking awesome so whatever."
If all goes according to plan, Beck will release the rest of The Velvet Underground & Nico onto his website, song by song. Get excited!
