Summer Squatters Can Catch Scabies But Not a Break

Nothing says summer like the return of the dreadlocked crust punks who take up residence on corners of the East Village and, increasingly, Williamsburg. Recognizable by their dogs, Crass patches and penchant for picking up cigarette butts from the street, these lovable freegan scamps are as much a part of the season as blackouts and to-go margaritas. So why is the man hassling them?

According to EV Grieve, "Early Saturday morning, five police cars responded to the north side of St. Marks Place near Second Avenue. There, several young adults were being questioned for unknown reasons. A young man in the group was handcuffed and placed in a squad car. The other members of the group left in separate directions carrying backpacks, one had a guitar. I asked one of them what happened: 'My friend was sleeping and they arrested him.' Why? 'I don't know. They said they were going to throw away our bags. And we have all of our stuff in here.'"

Despite the fact that everything in the bags was originally plucked from a garbage can or dumpster, not to mention it would be all the more punk for having been trash twice, we're with the crusties. All they're saying is give peace a chance...and cough up some money for a 40, yuppie scum.
