It’s been quite some time since muscleman Carrot Top yelled “1-800-CALL-ATT” in those constantly repeating commercials. Thanks to cell phones, the public phone has almost become an antique in less than a decade. Yes, there are still public phones lining the streets, but they are mostly used as bathrooms as they provide the privacy that men need. Save for the pool of urine on the sidewalk. We’d never even stopped to remember that they’re used to be actual phone booths. Tiny little transparent rooms where you could score a little bit of quiet. Sure, there was always the possibility of being held hostage in one of these glass boxes (we’re looking at you Colin Farrell), but they were a unique place to take a momentary break from the city.
Now we hear that there are only four of these actual phone booths left in Manhattan – and they’re all along West End Ave. Nick Carr has listed these remaining booths on The Huffington Post. They're located at 101st, 100th, 90th and 66th streets. Before they’re all gone, go in and make a call. Maybe even call Carrot Top, he is probably looking for someone to speak with. We don’t have to remind you to call collect, right? Good.
