Bout Action: Queens of Pain vs. Brooklyn Bombshells

In Section: NY comPRESSed » Posted In: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Sports Posted By: Linnea Covington
- The Queens’ reign is over. As they chanted “We’re number four! We’re number four!” after the end of Saturday’s game (albeit channeling the film Whip It), the Brooklyn Bombshells celebrated their first victory of the season. Neither one of these teams made it to the championship, but hey, they still put on a hell of a game.

Starting out the bout, Queens’ Hyper Lynx (No. 404) went against Brooklyn’s Carmen Monoxide (No. 12). At first the Queens players showed off their blocking skills, especially Bluebonnet Plague (No. 5) as she kept Monoxide at bay. However, despite their efforts she got ahead and became lead jammer. Lynx also pushed forward and both gals scored four points for their respected teams.

The second jam featured Brooklyn’s veteran player Barbara Ambush (No. 1600) against Queens’ rookie and the leagues oldest player, Steel Magnolia (No. 61). This was the first of many awesome segments with Magnolia as a jammer, and as she got ahead of Ambush, it was evident this is a position she will play again.

Brooklyn really showed how much they have grown as a team in the next jam. Lynx was up against Monoxide again, but this time, she couldn’t get through thanks to superb blocking action by namLes (No. 66) and Raggedy Animal (No. 67). Monoxide took the lead, scoring nine points for Brooklyn.

Even though Brooklyn obviously is becoming solider as a team, it certainly helped that two the Queens’ high scorers were out with injuries. Suzy Hotrod (No. 55) and Donna Matrix (No. 2) both cheered from the center of the rink. Brooklyn also had Aunti Christ (No. 666), one of their top players, as well as Evilicious (No. 420) and Demonica Mars (No. 27) out of the game.

Standing at the starting line, face serious and arms relaxed, Brooklyn’s Papierschnitt (No. 8 x11) appeared ready to take on Lynx. Again rookie Brooklyn players, OMG WTF (No. 753), Bitch Cassidy (No. 121) and nameLes, keep Lynx from getting ahead. Papierschnitt got sent to the penalty box after scoring seven points and, but the two minute jam ran out before Lynx could get any. With Sarah Impalin gone, the Queens adopted alternate player Mistress of the Knife. At first Knife has no opposing jammer, so she takes the lead before Papierschnitt gets out of the box.

With three minutes to go, OMG stepped up against Anais Ninja (No. 101). After making lead jammer, she fouled and joined teammate Megahurtz (No. the O.G.) in the penalty box. Double Clutch (No. Break her 1-9), Hard Anya (i4i), and Hela Skelter (No. 31) block Ninja and no points were gained for either team. The first half ends with 20 points for Queens, and 74 points for Brooklyn.

The half-time show wowed the crowed as Miss Saturn took her colorful hoops and rocked them on the rink. The bleacher vibrated with stomps and clapping after she managed to keep over a dozen hoops rotating around her body with out missing a beat. There was, of course, the terribly awkward Jeerleaders show. I can never tell if they do it in fun, or if they really think it looks good.

The second half started up with Ambush against Lynx. Ambush took off a hair too early and had to wait till Lynx got ahead, but still she managed to trump her. Steel came back up to prove her mad jamming skills and with the help of Queens’ Greta Turbo’s (No. 32) amazing blocking butt action, she got in the lead. There were no “whip its” to be seen, but players did utilize the “whip it shirt” method numerous times. OMG was back again and just as she got head of Steel, her victory was cut short by Referee Hambone. The crowd’s cheers turned to boos as Steel took the lead jammer position. In another jam, Knife took a hard fall for the third time, but again shooed away the medics. OMG also took a a nasty spill and sat out a few jams as Ace Bondage and Evilicous patted her on the back and give her water.

In the last jam OMG was back to block and Lynx was up against nameLes.  Despite OMG and Megahurtz trying to block her, Lynx took the lead. But, much to my delight (as a self professed Brooklyn fan), the Bombshells creamed the Queens, 137 to 67, and subsequently, they became number three.

This is part of our coverage of Gotham Girls roller derby, season 2009.  The post-season showdown is on Sat., Oct. 24 at Hunter College’s sportplex.

I also disagree with the statement made in this artice about the jeerleaders. Those ladies devote a ton of their time, money and energy to show their support for the league. For a group of ladies who have admitted that they have no previous dance or cheer experience, they do an amazing job of keeping the crowd entertained while the skaters take a well-deserved break and they deserve kudos. I'd like to see Linnea Covington get up in front of 1,000 people and perform a dance routine that ends in a double thigh stand!

Can't disagree more about the jeerleaders. Takes a lot of gusto to get on up there and do what they do, and having to follow something like Miss Saturn is no easy feat. However, the amount of passion those girls have is only topped by the roller girls themselves, and they are incredibly helpful and supportive to the league as a whole. Respect.
