Some of you might best know Adam Shankman as the director of Hairspray—that one where John Travolta does drag in a fat suit—but I prefer to think of him fondly as the judge most likely to burst into tears on So You Think You Can Dance. Where he registers on your pop culture radar is really neither here nor there. What's important is Shankman announced today his decision to put down the tissues and get back into the director's chair; he's been picked to take musical Rock of Ages from Broadway to the big screen.
In what is sure to become the next career-launching vehicle for some hollywood hearthrob with a signature coif-Zac Efron anyone?-Shankman will serve as both the director and choreographer for this latests theater-to-film reincarnation. Production is slated to begin next summer with a 2011 release date reports Variety.
Rock is sure to be a stretch for Shankman as it tells the tale of two people who meet, fall in love and try and fight to stay together against a soundtrack of 80's rock music as oppsed to his work on Hairspray which essentially told the tale of two people who met, fell in love and fought to stay together against a soundtrack of 60's pop music. I hope he's up to the challenge.
