Save Our Shitters

In Section: NY comPRESSed » Posted In: Religion/ Faith, Art, Manhattan Posted By: Jordan Galloway
- When the condition of the restrooms at Judson Memorial Church started going down the toilet, church officials decided it was time to restore some porcelain prestige to the Greenwich Village landmark by flushing out funds for restroom renovations with a bathroom art auction.

The Yes We Can! auction and benefit party will take place this Friday at the Church—located at 55 Washington Square South—and will feature work from Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Christo and Jean-Claude and Yoko Ono that church officials found circling the drain in their historic archives.

The irony is not lost on us,” said Judson minister Donna Schaper. “To think that some of our treasures from the past are going towards the toilets demonstrates the critical needs we now face. The current condition of our public space challenges our ability to continue to present significant and provocative work, and to further our crucial social outreach.”
