There’s just something about rough-around-the-edges animation that works better for me. I’d rather watch The Pink Panther cartoons than any of those bland, polished shows the kids watch these days. And in addition to its retro coolness, FX’s new cartoon Archer has a very dirty sense of humor.
Remember back when Daria was a thing on MTV, and you and all of your friends would jokingly say, “Wow, Daria’s best friend’s brother, Trent, is really hot! I mean, for a cartoon!” Well, Archer is all about the hot cartoon guy, except Sterling Archer happens to be a vain, mommy’s boy of a secret agent (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin), one who spends a great deal of time in intriguingly drawn black briefs.
Along for the ride is Archer’s icy, hard-drinking mother (voiced by the always welcome Jessica Walter), who runs the agency; Archer’s ex-girlfriend Lana (Aisha Taylor), a fellow spy; and Lana’s new boyfriend Cyril (Chris Parnell), who also works at the agency. Throw in some ditzy office workers as punching bags (Archer tosses donuts on the floor and orders Pam, the gossipy head of HR, to pretend they’re “carpet marbles” and she’s a hungry hungry hippo), a few dead hooker jokes and some hilariously uncomfortable dick jokes, like Archer geting an erection when someone threatens to kill his mother, and you have the sauciest, sexiest, funniest show on FX since Nip/Tuck jumped the shark.
The humor (and the hard-edged animation) might not be for everyone, but for those who dig it, Archer just became the ice cold martini of Thursday night TV.
