Atlas Sound and Memory Tapes at The Bell House

In Section: PRESS Play Posted By: Carter-Maness Thursday, February 4,2010
- Opener Memory Tapes was apparently rocking his first U.S. show last night at The Bell House. Given that context, leader (and sole actual member) Dayve Hawk and a drummer rode waves of Ableton backing tracks to relatively successful results. I use relatively because, yes, it was well-executed material (mostly remixed, dancier versions of songs from last year’s Seek Magic), but a computer screen cycling through sound waves facing the crowd doesn’t exactly come across as interesting or particularly notable. Considering the act’s synth parts aren’t too insane, I’d recommend at least hiring someone to hold down that aspect of the project for future live shows.

The awkward transition from masterful bedroom pop to a formidable live act is tough road that has plagued a lot of recent acts, so Hawk gets some major slack and can hopefully grow into the role over the upcoming Memory Tapes shows. Hell, the songs alone are strong enough to solder into one’s brain. He should have no problem creating a powerful live spectacle that all those chilled-out disciples can fully get behind.

Bradford Cox, performing under his solo Atlas Sound moniker, was on some Neil Young shit last night and it was surprisingly wonderful. Featuring hushed new material, Cox patiently meandered through a set that was also dotted with recent favorites. Highlights included his washy, stripped-down version of “Walkabout” from last year’s Logos and an encore cover of “Spring Hall Convert” off of Deerhunter’s Cryptograms.
