If the incredible views of Downtown, Midtown and Jersey City aren’t enough to look at, The Standard Hotel is offering something else for its guests to take a look at: The StandART Channel. As of March 5, the Meatpacking District hotel will show the channel, which features work from 10 celebrated video artists and was created in a partnership with the public art fanatics at Creative Time.
The channel will broadcast work by Lee Walton, Marco Brambilla, Marilyn Minter and others, all of which have different approaches but ultimately focus on what life is like in the city. After running at the hotel’s New York location, the channel will also be broadcast at its outposts in Miami and Los Angeles.
“Our partnership with Standard is a natural one as they are an organization that is invested in working directly with artists. They are also not afraid to take risks in thinking about new ways to present important and experimental work,” said Meredith Johnson, curator and director of consulting at Creative Time. “It’s rare that one has the opportunity to watch video artworks in a domestic space rather than a gallery. The context of a hotel video art channel allowed us to think about work one could invest time in—hypotonic, durational, and narrative pieces that would one can engage with in an intimate space over a series of nights or days.” With rooms running up to $1,800 per night, that could be an expensive proposition, but one well worth it.
