Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Duck! Two asteroids are flying by Earth today. The larger of the two, called 2010 RX30, zipped by this morning, most likely while you were still snoozing. The other one, 2010 RF12, will pass by Earth around 5:12 EST today. The smaller asteroid boasts a diameter measuring roughly 20 to 40 feet.

The smaller asteroid will zoom by Earth with only 49,000 miles to spare (to put this in perspective, the moon is roughly 238,600 miles away, so this is 0.2% of that distance). Apparently trying to make us feel better, NASA says this event happens almost daily.

NASA explains that both asteroids are innocuous, but the instance raises concern over how scientists would defend against a bolting space boulder that that isn’t so benign.
