Bout Action: Post-Season Double-Header, Brooklyn Bombshells Vs. Sockit Wenches; Queens of Pain Vs. Sockit Wenches

Linnea Covington -

As the roller derby season winds down, interest in the sport has just sparked. The crowd at Saturday’s double-header game was chock full of newbies, tweens, and kids. You could just see images of Ellen Page in their young, innocent eyes. While the games weren’t nearly as violent as the ones in “Whip It,” the visiting team, Sockit Wenches, gave our gals a run for the money and went home with the prize.

Whack Job Wins Competition

Mike Spence -

Is Bowling a sport? How about Ping-Pong? Competitive eating is a farce, right? Well, what would you think if I told you a new record was set in the 9th annual Masturbate-a-thon? That guy certainly isn’t an athlete, right? What if I told you he set the record at well over nine hours straight? Yeah, bowling sounds a lot easier now, doesn’t it?

Bout Action: Queens of Pain vs. Brooklyn Bombshells

Linnea Covington -
The Queens’ reign is over. As they chanted “We’re number four! We’re number four!” after the end of Saturday’s game (albeit channeling the film Whip It), the Brooklyn Bombshells celebrated their first victory of the season. Neither one of these teams made it to the championship, but hey, they still put on a hell of a game.

A Novel Idea

Jordan Galloway -

Shirts emblazoned with names are normally either touting a sports figure or some odious designer, and neither one has ever done much for us. Apparently, David Bukszspan felt the same way. This Sunday he’ll be launching Novel-T, his new line of T-shirts that look like they’re touting sports stars but really celebrate the heavyweights of literature. Who needs A-Rod when you can have Ahab? Jordan Galloway chats with Bukszpan and his partner Michael Kravetsky about his idea, his favorite writers and possible Yankees-Red Sox style beefs.

Yankee Stadium Offers Local Produce from the West Coast

Henry Melcher -
While sports fans can still buy beer, hot dogs and other typical ballpark food at Yankee Stadium, the new place offers a fruit stand with fresh produce. The New York Times piece "Buy Me Some Peanuts and Nectarine" explains that while the fruit is certainly not cheap, it has been very popular with the fans that don’t usually eat the food at a game.

Temporary Skatepark Opens...Inside a Store

Henry Melcher -

Bring your skateboard, dark jeans and messy hair over to the skate store Autumn to experience their temporary indoor skate park. The attraction which is also hosted by Quicksilver will, just like Hanukkah, last for eight days and is open to the public, but there will be two special attractions before Saturday.

Daily Show Defeats Nightly News in Softball

Henry Melcher -
Jon Stewart and the writers for The Daily Show aren’t just funny people, they can play a mean game of softball. Last night, The Daily Show team took on Brian Williams and the folks behind Nightly News in a friendly sports match-up. The game was on Manhattan's West Side and after the “real” news team was defeated 12-2, Brian Williams gave a pretty hilarious post-game recap. We’ve seen Williams on SNL and as a frequent guest on The Daily Show, but his brief presser makes us think he should ditch this actual news thing and turn to comedy.
