Smoking's Back, Baby!

Editors -
We always assumed that people were still smoking inside because the places we tend to hang out are less than savory, but according to Eater, it's happening all over.

The Hose Has Closed

Gerry Visco -
The Hose has run dry.

The infamous Alphabet City gay bar, which opened earlier this year on Avenue B between East 13th and East 14th Streets, has spent months playing host to popular parties like Manthrax, Mooseknuckle and Rocket but is no more.

Fratbars and Socialites and The CW! Oh My!

Mike Spence -

Tinsley Mortimer, a socialite—which, according to Webster’s is a woman who marries rich and makes handbags—was spotted at new sports bar The Doghouse Saloon, which is taking over the Annex's old space (just when we thought the block couldn't get shittier). Mortimer was filming her new CW reality show in the Lower East Side bar, both of which will probably be enjoyed by enough out-of-towners to limp along for a few years.

Oh, Shisha!

Editors -
With the closing of divisive Avenue B nightclub Le Souk, the thoroughfare, according to EV Grieve, is now down to one hookah bar. Paired with the recent ban on flavored tobacco (a trip to the Nat Sherman store on 42nd Street this weekend revealed that many of the brand's flavors are no longer for sale under their former names—"Hint of Mint" cigarettes are now sold as "Hint" menthols), things are looking grim for recreational smokers in New York.

Rebecca Huval -
This year's (Saturday!) Halloween bashes ask you don costumes ranging from 1994 cliches to macabre Victorian garb. They'll have you dance to The Very Best and The Monster Mash. Start sewing—it's only a day away!

Bloomberg Sours on Flavored Tobacco

Rebecca Huval -

Take a long drag of your Warm Mocha Mint Cigar - it might be the last you buy in the city. Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed the ban on flavored tobacco into law yesterday. But before you hyperventilate, read the fine print: the ban doesn’t include clove or menthol cigarettes or even flavored hookah.

1Oak Tells Neighbors It Ain't No Punching Bag

Jordan Galloway -
Neighborhood warriors are flexing their muscles and voicing their frustrations with the influx of nightlife hotspots they see as pure nuisances. Recently several have successfully silenced their sleep competition and forced bars to change their hard-partying ways—do the Jane Hotel and Hotel Le Bleu ring any bells? But in the face of all this unneighborly hostility, one bar owner took a stand in a reversal of roles that has some residential neighbors of bar 1Oak on the wrong side of a $2 million lawsuit.

Neighbors Show No Love for Le Bleu

Jordan Galloway -
Taking a cue from the fury West Village residents unleashed on the smoke-hazed sidewalks outside Jane Hotel, the fine folks of Park Slope rolled out their own version of an unwelcome wagon for rooftop hotspot Vue Restaurant and Lounge. It's the kind of reception typically reserved for the new girl in town by bitchy queen bees in high school environments—especially when said new girl is super hot and automatically popular.

Hey Brother, Can You Spare A Dime? Not Even For A MILF?

Mike Spence -

The Great Recession has been the cause of some incredibly sad things. Mortgages are collapsing, 401Ks are sinking, credit card debt is popping out of the collective eyeballs of the nation, and all the while more and more people are unemployed. There is always a silver lining though, such as a middle-aged woman who decides to make a big career shift because of the harsh economic climate.
