Off with the Fluff

Martin McDonagh keeps audiences squirming with his new black comedy

By Mark Peikert
A Behanding in Spokane, Martin McDonagh’s first American-based play, turns out to be a subtle, brutally funny indictment of America. So funny and so brutal, in fact, that multiple theatergoers left their seats during the 90-minute show to storm out of the theater. Read more

Flavor of the Week: How Not to Be a Whore

For KEVIN ALLISON, a trick was no treat

By Kevin Allison
After my comedy group The State made a pilot for MTV, the network left us hanging. I was 23 and for months I thought, I’ll either be on TV next week or I’ll be homeless. One rent day, I walked the streets scanning the ground for change, like a kid looking for Easter eggs at a Seder. I didn’t know how to make money. The only thing I was good at was pretending I pooped my pants onstage. But my roommate Ray had an idea. “People don’t know it,” he said, “but prostitution can be fun!” Read more

The Brooklyn Unnaturalist

By Tama Janowitz
OVER THE TIME we have been living here, on the 16th floor, there has been a number of unusual bird incidents. I never expected I would get to see, in such close proximity, the red-tailed hawk (which, up close, appears the size of a German Shepherd), nor the sparrow hawk, nor the chicken hawk. By Caeriel
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Let’s face it:You’re easily distracted. I don’t blame you.The world’s a fascinating place, and you’re interested in so many parts of it. Unfortunately, that passion for all life has to offer can sometimes mean you lack focus.Without sustained attention, there are some tasks you’ll just fail at, and some situations you’ll never be able to get deeply into (often including relationships). The only solution (this week, at least) is to put on blinders if necessary, and completely block out all potential diversions, so you can concentrate entirely on the task at hand. Pressed for Time: Winning Time

By Joshua David Stein
Even if you think the whole enterprise of basketball is a bit silly—putting a ball in a hoop, really?—the rivalry between Indianapolis Pacers and the New York Knicks transcends the confines of the court. The two teams hate each other like the Smiths and the McCoys and no one embodied this vendetta more than Reggie Miller, the Haman to legions of Knick fans. This film, by Crazy Love director Dan Klores, is as much about the epic rivalry, fit for an amphitheater, as it is about the game. Read more Read it in print
