Finally, an MTA Announcement We Like

Rebecca Huval -

If you're as fed up with weekend subway delays as we are, you'll be glad to hear that ticket prices will finally reflect spotty service. The new MTA chief Jay Walder has decided to lower fares on nights and weekends. A computerized fare card would charge different prices at different times of day, including higher prices during rush hours.

Massive Subway Delays This Weekend: Partiers Revolt!

Staff -

After a night at the bars, we all love tipsily swaying from a subway pole. To make this quintessential New York experience more like purgatory, the MTA will give us the party favor it does best: massive delays. When 18 of its 20 lines skip stops this weekend, expect revelers to riot and hell’s after-party to fire up just beneath your feet.

Where the MTA Puts That Extra 25 Cents

Staff -

Most of the subway stations we frequent smell like warm trash or decomposing bodies (what's up, Hoyt-Schermerhorn?) and are decorated with rats, falling tiles and (admittedly sometimes hilarious) graffiti drawn on advertisements. Not so for the folks who frequent the Columbus Circle stop! Midtown's finest have found one of their stations outfitted with a commission by fancy dead artist Sol LeWitt.

Councilwoman Told to Beat It: MTA Rejects Proposal for Michael Jackson Subway Station

Jordan Galloway -

There's just no rest for the King of Pop. Attempts have been made around the world since Michael Jackson's death in June to memorialize his legacy. From concerts to television specials to...having subway stations renamed in his honor?

Choose Your Own Misadventure

Henry Melcher -

“You are a fugitive from the law.” But, you are a polite fugitive. Regardless of how nice of a person you are, you find yourself in the Port Authority Bus Terminal trying to evade the police. This is how an adult version of the childhood"Your Own Adventure" game created by Rudolph Delson begins. The game is both funny and a little bit moving (if you play your cards right).

Plane Crashes Outside JC Penney. Let the Conspiracy Theories Begin!

Henry Melcher -

A flight instructor and his student must really love the sweet deals at JC Penney, because they decided to crash their plane into one of the retail store’s parking lots. Gothamist reports that a single-engine plane that left from Essex County Airport crashed within 100 yards of a JC Penney in the Rockaway Townsquare Mall. Both people in the plane walked away from the crash relatively unharmed. Apparently there were problems with the plane’s engine, but then again the store does boast “The Lowest Prices for Back to School” so obviously there was some incentive.

Child Takes Over Subway Car

Nicole Kagan -

Ever been wary about who was operating your subway car? You’re probably not the only one. This past Sunday Jules Cattie’s suspicions were confirmed when he saw a young boy riding in the operator’s compartment of an uptown Lexington Avenue express train.

Prius Plants Itself in New Pedi Zone, Times Square Receives Glam Street Furniture

Jerry Portwood -

The ongoing transformation of Broadway into a pedestrian-friendly zone has received minor backlash. The lawn chairs that have been in Times Square have now been replaced by fancy metal furniture (wasn't this all supposed to be a short-term experiment? Seems like it's getting more and more permanent...) and some landscaping. One tourist told the Post: "I wanted to see taxi-to-taxi gridlock and grittiness," said Abbey Gonzales, of Austin, Texas. "I didn't expect to see trees in the middle of the street." But we were more surprised by the giant, 18-foot-tall daisies that popped up alongside Madison Square Park this week.

Second Ave. Subway Likely Delayed, Senate GOP Killed Bill that Would Have Helped Landlords

Staff -

The Second Avenue subway line is gonna be delayed. According to a yearlong MTA review, it may be delayed to 2017. That's news that came around the same time that area landlords of businesses located along the route of the subway route learned that a bill that would have offered them much-needed assistance was killed.
