Gay Marriage is Going to Be Put To a Vote in NYC?

Staff -
City Hall newsaper is reporting that, despite midterm elections this week that saw a wave of Republican victories around the state and a series of setbacks for gay marriage around the country, supporters of same-sex marriage say they are closer than ever to achieving passage. According to City Hall’s most recent count, 21 Democratic Senators have expressed that they are in favor of passage, however several of those have said they would prefer it if a bill did not come to the floor right now. Performa Kicks Off With Fischerspooner at MoMA

Editors -

In the paper today, Kurt Gottschalk uncovers what's happening at this year's Performa. To kick things off, the performance art biennial had a party at MoMA on Sunday night where Fischerspooner, clad in wacky silver outfits and sneakers—and kneepads!—from sponsor Asics, played its hits, including  Electroclash anthem "Emerge," to a crowd gearing up for a few weeks of off the wall performance spectacle. Check out the performance after the jump.

The Vinyl Solution: Factory 25 combines vinyl, DVD and art

Matt Connolly -
At a moment when DVD sales continue to decline and new releases can often be downloaded (legally or otherwise) days after their theatrical release, Matt Grady has taken a bit of a gamble. The 39-year-old founder of Factory 25, a new independent film and music label based out of Brooklyn, is betting that you’ll still shell out some money for a DVD—or even a vinyl record—so long as what you’re getting is more than just a disc in a plastic case. Bout Action: Post-Season Double-Header, Brooklyn Bombshells Vs. Sockit Wenches; Queens of Pain Vs. Sockit Wenches

Linnea Covington -

As the roller derby season winds down, interest in the sport has just sparked. The crowd at Saturday’s double-header game was chock full of newbies, tweens, and kids. You could just see images of Ellen Page in their young, innocent eyes. While the games weren’t nearly as violent as the ones in “Whip It,” the visiting team, Sockit Wenches, gave our gals a run for the money and went home with the prize.

This Piggy Bank is a Pipe Bomb

Jordan Galloway -

What kind of a world do we live in where a man can't sit on his stoop with fake sticks of dynamite without getting arrested, especially when all said man wants to do is turn them into a piggy bank?

Jordan Galloway -
New York Press just honored musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark as the Best Backstage Broadway Drama honoree in our annual Best Of issue, and just to prove they really deserved it, the musical is continuing to be the biggest hot mess on the Great White Way.

Shankman set to 'Rock' Hollywood

Jordan Galloway -

Some of you might best know Adam Shankman as the director of Hairspray—that one where John Travolta does drag in a fat suit—but I prefer to think of him fondly as the judge most likely to burst into tears on So You Think You Can Dance. Where he registers on your pop culture radar is really neither here nor there. What's important is Shankman announced today his decision to put down the tissues and get back into the director's chair; he's been picked to take musical Rock of Ages from Broadway to the big screen.

Dead Honored With Light Show

Editors -
Tonight, the Empire State Building will be lit with tie-dye colors in honor of the opening of the new exhibit The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society. And just ignore the plumes of smoke from nearby, because those have nothing to do with the celebration at all.
