Jessica Yatrofsky and the new male nude

By Joseph Alexiou | February 2,2011
Jessica Yatrofsky has spent a large part of her twenties looking at naked men. Indeed, Yatrofsky has devoted much of her life to her love of the unclothed male form. And after years of criticism, academic probation and accusations of prostitution, it's finally paying off. Yatrofsky, 29 and heavily eye-linered, will see the publication of her first book, a collection of photography called I more

Not-So-Great Wall

Gowanus Chinese saves energy but throws out taste

By Joseph Alexiou | November 30,2010
Michael & Ping’s, Michael Bruno’s Chinese eatery in Gowanus, looks great on paper: very reasonable prices, a hip location and a “green certified restaurant” status (according to a restaurant association called Dine Green). It’s clear from the start that the restaurant has its heart in the right place; however, the most important part of this four-month-old eatery—the food—is in disarray. more

Diagnosis in Question

Caregivers seek answers for Lewy Body Dementia

By Joseph Alexiou | November 11,2010
Eight years ago Norma Loeb, now 57, was regularly taking her mother, Lillian, to a geriatrician after the 80-year-old Bronx native began experiencing memory loss. The doctor hesitated to diagnose Lillian with Alzheimer’s disease due to her alertness and cognitive abilities. Then he noticed the elder woman’s shuffling and head movements, which were not unlike Parkinson’s—behaviors Norma had noticed for years. More visits to neurologists at Mount Sinai and Columbia Presbyterian caused only confusion until one doctor mentioned the possibility of a disease called Lewy Body Dementia. Norma did the research herself online. “I could not believe that she had every symptom,” she said during a recent phone interview. more

Bash Compactor: Fiction and Friction

At a fundraising party for Qu(e)ery, an organization of queer librarians

By Joseph Alexiou | September 29,2010
“306.77086642: Gay men and sexual practices,” read one sign on the wall in the back room at Greenpoint’s Blackout Bar last Friday evening. The number was not a bi-annual statistic of Pastor Eddie Long’s sexual conquests, but an actual Dewey Decimal system number, mounted for a fundraising party held by Qu(e)ry, an organization of queer librarians. Crowded with lens-wearing queer-leaning guys, girls and everything in between, a lot of singles drifted around with longing, if not somewhat myopic gazes. more

Hanging with Hoke and the gang at Grace Exhibition Space in Bushwick

By Joseph Alexiou | March 16,2010
“Performance art is the purest form of art,” claimed Erik Hokanson, who runs the Grace Exhibition Space, a medium-sized loft in Bushwick that exhibits only performance art, with his girlfriend Jill McDermid. “You’re emotionally enabling, getting people involved. It’s different than theater or dance because when you do that, you’re pretending.” more

Bash Compactor: Party Nards

Losing my shirt at Nardi Gras

By Joseph Alexiou | February 16,2010
Losing your shirt is a stupid cliché to use in reference to an underwear party like Nardi Gras, the gay Mardi Gras fete organized by New York’s dirtiest men, Daniel Nardicio and DJ Adam. But since I’m that kind of asshole, I did just that, at the end of the party right before I was leaving! Luckily I kept my pants on—and was one of the few who did. more

Bash Compactor: Popping Pills

Heading into Arena on Sunday night for The Pill Awards

By Joseph Alexiou | January 27,2010
Because there's a month between The Glammies and The Pill Awards, New York gays are subjected to something akin to the space between the Golden Globes and the Oscars. It’s enough to make a Chelsea queen drop his meth habit and get some sleep. more

Bash Compactor: Bon Shelter

At Susanne Bartsch and Kenny Kenny's new party, Bon Bon

By Joseph Alexiou | December 8,2009
If new Chelsea club Juliet wants to be the West Side’s answer to The Box, it was clever in hosting Susanne Bartsch and Kenny Kenny’s new Tuesday night party, Bon Bon. When I pulled up at 11:30, there were four strapping gents already guiding a fifth shirtless friend out the front door. more

Basement & Treble

Inside New York's newest underground playground

By Joseph Alexiou | November 5,2009
In a town full of skyscrapers, it’s often what’s happening beneath the sidewalk that ends up being the most exciting. Hidden spaces—think SubMercer, the basement of La Esquina or the late, lamented Undochine—are black gold in New York's over-saturated nightlife scene. A hard-to-find, little-known location with the right music and crowd can become an overnight sensation, and if a group of people just above 14th Street play their cards right, they might have New York’s next one on their hands. more
