Where's The Beef?

Sloppy meat is taking over the Bowery, but now there are sandwiches

By Danny Gold | March 9,2011
It`s not often that Cam'ron and the Dipset affiliates show up to do a live performance—and smoke a ton of weed—for the soft opening of a sandwich shop. But that's precisely what happened opening night of Bowery Beef, a new Massachusetts-style roast beef spot now open on the Bowery. more

Bash Compactor: Take A Bao

Downtown chef and noted rabblerouser Eddie Huang celebrated his 29th birthday last week on Rivington Street.

By Danny Gold | March 9,2011
Downtown chef and noted rabblerouser Eddie Huang, whose most recent exploits include a 4Loko party that ended with his restaurant Xiao Ye being shuttered, celebrated his 29th birthday last week on Rivington Street. Dudes in hoodies with unscuffed Nikes mingled with hot Asian girls as a soundtrack of mid-'90s New York hip-hop blared. It stank like weed, but it was great to hear the Beatnuts being blasted for the first time in years. more

Jack Goes Shoplifting

How Noah Klein became Philip Seymour Hoffman

By Danny Gold | March 2,2011
Noah Klein doesn't know why you want to hear his music. "I didn't promote it at all, I didn't think anyone would listen to it," the 21-year-old New School senior says about the airy, haunting electro songs he records and performs under the moniker Philip Seymour Hoffman. "I don't consider myself a musician, I just like arranging sounds." more

Bash Compactor: Snow Bunnies

Jim Managan's Winter's Children exhibit, which opened at Milk Studios last weekend.

By Danny Gold | January 19,2011
"I see a bunch of crazy white people with nothing to do," Ron of Vice magazine's "Hey Ron" advice column told me as he gazed into a gigantic photo of naked beauties cavorting in the snow. The photo was part of snowboarder extraordinaire Jim Managan's Winter's Children exhibit, which opened at Milk Studios last weekend. more

Bash Compactor: So I Creep

At the opening of Creep Show exhibit at Bold Hype gallery

By Danny Gold | December 21,2010
With the exception of a limited few, I view most street artists and graffiti writers the same way I view subway platform break dancers: Sure, that shit was interesting years ago, but if you’re still into it, you’re the equivalent of a European tourist blocking my way to the Q train. And I kind of want to toss you in front of said Q train. more

Bash Compactor: New Editions

At the launch of Exhibition A at the Gagosian Gallery

By Danny Gold | December 14,2010
“I’ve never been this far uptown. I have no idea where I am,” startlingly handsome (even to a straight dude) photographer Mark Borthwick told me as we mingled last week at the Gagosian Gallery, nearly 77 blocks north of East Houston Street. We were celebrating the launch of Exhibition A, a flashy new sales website similar to Gilt Group, but with art instead of clothes. more

Bash Compactor: God Save the King

At the 10th anniversary of The Half King with Sebastian Junger and sex bathrooms

By Danny Gold | September 28,2010
In the summer of 1954, a 19-year-old kid from a working-class South Brooklyn neighborhood took the subway up to Columbia University. He had dropped out of Catholic high school at 16 and joined the navy a year later. But he had spent his spare time studying greats like Conrad, Fitzgerald and Hemingway. more

Bash Compactor: The Light Stuff

At Mother NYC's light show at The Standard Hotel

By Danny Gold | August 25,2010
Back in college, a laser light show usually involved getting stoned with a bunch of filthy hippies, then heading to an amphitheater to watch fake stars dance to the tunes of Led Zeppelin. This was something different. Last Wednesday night, the folks from Mother NYC created a crazy 20-minute light show in the windows of 170 rooms of The Standard Hotel using LED lights and 60 dancers, putting on something that was pretty damn spectacular. more

Hoping For The Worst

The surprisingly normal charm of Worst Case Ontario

By Danny Gold | June 30,2010
TO MAKE IT as a rock band in New York these days, it can seem like you need to have a gimmick; you’re either transgender Siamese twins from the North Pole or boat-shoe-wearing prepsters who use “summer” as a verb— something, anything, to get people to notice. Worst Case Ontario is neither, and that’s OK. more

Bash Compactor: Balls Out

At ping-pong exhibition at SPiN New York with Susan Sarandon and pals

By Danny Gold | June 29,2010
“I was a junior champion until I was 14, and then I discovered weed,” said Will Horowitz with a smile on his face. “I’d have been able to take any of these guys,” Horowitz, the executive chef and owner of Duck’s Eatery, was commenting on the collection of world champions playing an exhibition at SPiN New York, the city’s premier (and only) ping-pong nightclub. more
