Savvy Sex is having our next meetup at the Brick Theater, on June 23rd at 7:30 p.m., to watch and discuss a play on women's body image, their negative portrayals in the media and the destruction of their self-esteem and sense of self as a result. It is called the "Big Girls Club," and it's a part of the AntiDepressant Festival. **Please keep in mind that it is an adult-oriented play that is supposed to be humorous yet extremely thought provoking. After the play we will grab drinks with the cast. It will be a great time and I hope many of you can make it. There is a special rate for Savvy Sex members of $13.25, which includes theater and amazon fees, for the June 23rd showing that can be bought directly from our meetup site. Tickets will distributed at the door. The cast and our group will be meeting afterward at Huckleberry Bar, located just a few blocks from the theater. See below for more info about the lounge and play. See you there! Frances/Jen Savvy Sex Organizers http://www.meetup.com... All they want is to be happy. But as they gorge themselves on unhealthy food and ads for BUTTERFACE! the TV Show, the night escalates into a sadistic game of truth or dare that reveals a shockingly surrealistic glimpse to their disturbing world. Big Girls Club (Happy Dance Dance Princess Show) is a play on uppers, exploring excess, fetishism and female cruelty propelled by our ever schizophrenic and media frenzied culture. Playwright-Director Leah Winkler attempts to accurately portray the ugliness modern culture forces upon women, highlighting the darkest deeds females are driven to commit in order to survive. Big Girls Club questions whether this cruelty and self-deprecation is embedded into pop culture, if it is inevitable, or if it's just a person's true nature. Instead of making a typical play empowering women by "candidly" talking about sex and shoes, Big Girls Club exposes women at their worst moments with their cruelest, most vicious selves, thus provoking thought and sympathy ( and a hint of comedy). As Leah puts it, "I'm a firm believer that you can't make things better unless you are aware of how bad things really are." Starring Lisa Bierman, Nancy Upton, Katie Hannigan, and Joel Israel. Big Girls Club will play as part of The Antidepressant Festival, June 5-July 4 at The Brick (575 Metropolitan Avenue between Union and Lorimer). Tickets are $15.00 (if purchased at the door - does not include theater's online convenience fee) or through www.theatermania.com (212-352-3101 or toll-free: 1-866-811-4111).
