California Dreaming, Responsibly

Steven Peros subverts the Hollywood myth with 'Footprints'

Most people who go to the movies have never been to Hollywood. They never see Hollywood as a factory town where movies—and the idea of movies—are manufactured and marketed, which is probably why they don’t understand the political economy behind its product (although they’ve probably seen it featured in a movie). Some filmmakers and journalists like to promote the myth of Hollywood as a wonderful, harmless dream machine but that disingenuous notion is touchingly subverted in Steven Peros’ Footprints.

The Lumet Myth

On the eve of a Film Forum retrospective, ARMOND WHITE picks apart the legend of New York's most honored filmmaker

Not loving films by the man considered a cinematic knickerbocker, a celluloid Damon Runyon, might seem unpatriotic because, for the past three decades, Sidney Lumet has been marketed as the filmmaker who most accurately depicts modern New York’s grittiness. That rep is a residual benefit of Lumet being a New York–based, rather than Los Angeles–based, director. But this happenstance is what determined Lumet’s choice of material, actors and fast-and-dirty methods. The hallm

Bored Game

Toy Story 3 suckers fans to think they can accept this drivel

Pixar has now made three movies explicitly about toys, yet the best movie depiction of how toys express human experience remains Whit Stillman’s 1990 Metropolitan. As class-conscious Tom Townsend (Edward Clements) tries fitting in with East Side debutantes, he discovers his toy cowboy pistol in his estranged father’s trash. Without specifying the model, Stillman evokes past childhood, lost innocence and Townsend’s longing for even imagined potency. But Toy Story 3 is so besotted with brand names and product-placement that it stops being about the innocent pleasures of imagination—the usefulness of toys—and strictly celebrates consumerism.

Black Sheep Vs. Black Swan

Ballet troupes across America will snicker at Black Swan, but Kanye West’s “Runaway” dance scenes might make them swoon

Ballerinas figure prominently in Kanye West’s half-hour film “Runaway,” and are among its many symbols of the agony and beauty of artistic struggle. But in Black Swan, one ballerina, Nina Sayers (played by Natalie Portman), becomes director Darren Aronofsky’s mechanism for a ridiculous psychological thriller that is genuinely less thrilling and revealing than West’s magical mystery movie.
