HOUSING ADVOCATES HONORED

on may 1, three upper west side streets were renamed after community housing and tenants' rights activists. rep. charles rangel (pictured) unveiled the sign that renamed west 95th street between columbus avenue and central park west "robert woolis way." woolis, co-founder of the mitchell lama residents' coalition, was a longtime advocate for the affordable housing program. "bob made all the city elected officials look good, he kept us on our toes," rangel said. rep. jerrold nadler, who hired woolis as an advisor while he served in the assembly, praised him for organizing residents throughout the city. "it's a pleasure to honor him today," nadler said. doris rosenblum, who co-chaired the mitchell lama residents' coalition for six years, was also honored. her husband, paul rosenblum, and daughter beth unveiled her street sign, which renamed west 94th street between columbus avenue and central park west. james garst, co-founder of the new york state tenants and neighbors coalition and another mitchell-lama advocate, was the third honoree. his wife, rina garst, removed the covering for west 94th street between columbus and amsterdam avenues, which now bear his name. council member gale brewer praised the three advocates for their work on tenants rights.
