Mapping Crime on the East Side

A new NYPD database pinpoints felony crimes in the neighborhood -- and the area around Bloomingdale's stands out

Want to know where the crime is on the east side?

The NYPD has released its first interactive map of felony crimes in the city, showing in detail where murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft have occurred from Jan. 1, 2012 through October of this year.

Residents can enter their address into the NYPD's map -- available at maps.nyc.gov/crime -- to see which crimes have occurred in and around their neighborhood.

What they'll find on the east side is that there is a significant cluster of crime reported in and around Bloomingdale's, on Lexington Ave. between 59th and 60th streets. According to the data, that location accounted for 89 crimes during the period, including:

? 3 robberies

? 2 assaults

? 15 burglaries, and

? 69 larcenies

? Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Our Town analyzed which areas on the east side experienced a high rate of crime, relative to the surrounding area.

? Madison Avenue between 60th and 61st Street is home to the retail outlets DKNY, Calvin Klein and Barneys New York.

The area around Hunter College, at Park Avenue between 68th and 69th Street, is home to hundreds of students, who can be targets for opportunistic thieves. Lexington Avenue and 68th Street, also adjacent to Hunter College, saw three assaults this year.

? 68th Street between 1st Avenue and FDR Drive is home to Rockefeller University.

? The 86th Street train station at Lexington Avenue is largely commercial with a nearby Best Buy and GameStop.

? The area around the 96th Street train stop at Lexington Avenue is residential and commercial with the nearby Monterey Public Garden.

? 22 Crimes

? The area around the 103rd Street 6 train stop at Lexington Avenue is residential and commercial and saw 11 assaults and 10 robberies this year.
