more than a year has passed since electronics retailer circuit city folded, shuttering the store on broadway and west 79th street. now, discount clothing retailer filene's basement will expand into the old space.

filene's basement will double in size, taking 22,700 square feet and leaving zales jewelry store in place, according to thomas citron, broker for cushman and wakefield, which brokered the deal. the expanded store will also house a syms clothing outpost, featuring its first "tailored and tux" location for suits and tuxedos.

"the whole purpose of this store was to double the size of the store so they can offer people of the upper west side a larger selection and do a men's store and a women's store," citron said.

the new store is set to open for the spring and summer seasons.

meanwhile, simon oren and andy d'amico, the men behind 5 napkin burger, are expanding their presence on the upper west side. the namesake burger, originally a dish at nice matin on west 79th street and amsterdam avenue, was popular enough to launch a restaurant in chelsea. a second location just opened on broadway and west 80th street, where ollie's noodle shop and grille used to be.
