On Friday, May 10, workers finished installing the spire atop One World Trade Center, making it officially the tallest building in the United States at a symbolic 1,776 feet. The spire itself is 408 feet tall. The Associated Press reported that the spire, when finished and active, will serve as a broadcast antenna and keep aircraft away with powerful red LED lights that can be seen from miles away. The tower now stands taller than the Twin Towers that collapsed as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
