Steps on Broadway Artists' Talk Series with Jane Goldberg

Steps Beyond continues its Artists' Talk Series with a film by famed tapper Jane Goldberg, followed by a panel discussion. The film, "By Word of Foot," is a documentation of Goldberg's three tap festivals held in NYC venues in 1980, 1982 and 1985, paving the way for tap's continuity by bringing together tap masters and students. The discussion that follows will feature panelists Goldberg, David Parker, Melinda Mousouris, Barbara Duffy, and Heather Cornell, discussing passing on the tradition of tap, and how the creation of tap festivals helped in the codification and understanding that tap can be taught.

El Cimarron (The Runaway Slave)

El Cimarron was created by German composer Hans Werner Henze while he lived in Cuba in 1969-70. Subtitled Biographie des geflohenen Sklaven Esteban Montejo (Biography of the runaway slave Esteban Montejo), the opera is based around the autobiographical passages recounted by Montejo, then 103 years old, to Cuban writer Miguel Barnet in 1963. Barnet had become fascinated by an article he read about Montejo, a Cuban man of African descent who had lived as a slave in captivity, was subsequently a fugitive slave in the Las Villas wilderness, and a soldier in the Cuban War for Independence.
