About Town

. . . . . . .

LET THE PARTY BEGIN

Marcel Camus’ Oscar-winning 1959 film, BLACK ORPHEUS, transports the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice from the Underworld to Rio’s Carnaval. So instead of being all gloomy and dour, the story here explodes with color, costume and non-stop music.

March 1-2

DON’T BE BLUE

If you prefer your movies a little darker and a little off-kilter, then 1986 was a banner year. First came Brazil, then, just when you thought nothing could top that, along came Lynch’s BLUE VELVET, a film about severed ears, Pabst Blue Ribbon, compressed gas, voyeurism and “In Dreams.”

March 3-16

Film Forum, 209 W. Houston St. (betw. 6th & 7th Aves.), 212-727-8110. Call for price and showtimes.

JUST LIKE HOME

One thing the French and Italians have taught us is good film critics make the best directors. In this case, it’s NY Press’ Matt Zoller Seitz. His debut film, HOME—about a house party in Park Slope—includes partygoers you’ll recognize: cynics, struggling artists, the self-assured, the desperately free-spirited, a few assholes and some lonely people. You may, in fact, hate a lot of them.

March 2-8

Two Boots Pioneer Theater, E. 3rd St. (at Ave. A), 212-591-0434; 9, $9.

SHOWGIRL SECRETS

You may have thought that Showgirls was funny enough all by itself, but by taking an up close and personal—even gynecological—look at the film by means of an “interview” with screenwriter “Joe Eszterhas,” the Upright Citizens’ Brigade hopes to reveal just what dark secrets were hidden during SHOWGIRLS: THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE!, one of the UCB’s most popular ongoing shows, finally returning to NYC after a long stint in LA.

March 2; every Thurs. through April 27th

UCB Theater, 306 W. 26th St.  (betw. 8th & 9th Aves.), 212-366-9176; 9:30, $5.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT

Whether it’s buffets or dozens of small plates, we all love to stuff ourselves. The same goes for plays. Take a sampling of this and that when Emerging Artists Theatre present EATFEST, a festival of new short plays. Hey, if you don’t like the taste of something, just skip and try the next course.

March 7-26

Theatre 5, 311 West 43rd St., 5th floor (betw. 8th & 9th Aves.), 212-247-2429; Call for showtimes, $18.
