After the drive-in movies’ 75-year decline, one Californian is trying to bring them back. The New York Times is running a story about Bryan Kennedy and his “guerilla drive-ins” that are using simple technologies and industrial spaces to bring back this American tradition. All he needs is a home projector, an FM transmitter and an open wall. To update people on when the screenings are and provide those interested in starting their own chapter (there are currently about 240) with helpful tips he runs mobmov.org. The films are completely free for those who watch, but Kennedy pays about $200 in licensing fees and has to rent a car to put his projector on. While the free aspect of these events is great, Kennedy admits that he hopes to have a business model up and running in the near future. For now, it’s still a fun, free piece of nostalgia.
