Spinnerette at Bowery Ballroom

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who attended the Spinnerette concert at Bowery Ballroom last night—Brody Dalle can command an audience.

From the second she took the stage, members of the crowd (sold out, by the way) head-bopped, swayed and screamed. Concertgoers wore anything from pearls and pastel cardigans to tattoos just beginning to warp on aging skin, but the same excitement showed on all faces; this was Spinnerette’s first performance in the United States and they were stoked.

Dalle started slow, assuming an almost insolent attitude at the beginning of her set. By the end, however, she was singing lustily, dancing around the stage. And beyond Dalle’s badass attitude and punk rock pedigree, she has a unique, rich, powerful voice—it comes across in her recorded music, but it is even more remarkable live.

The opening act, Band of Skulls, despite the shaggy blond lead singer’s Cousin It impersonation and intriguingly limited audience interaction, was strong and polished. They sounded like the rock stars they’re sure to become.
