UPDATED: Mark Sanford Did Not Take a Hike. He Was Having an Affair

Last week, South Carolina governor Mark Sanford went missing and nobody knew his whereabouts. Apparently not even his staff or family were told where he was going. The trip was supposed to be a  relaxation break for the Governor, who recently received a good dose of humiliation when his outspoken refusal of stimulus funds for South Carolina was shot down. Sanford clearly needed some time off,  so he did what any responsible father would do over Father’s Day weekend—he ran away.

After much speculation about where the Governor went, his staff released a statement Tuesday night saying that he had been hiking the Appalachian Trail. Oh, well that’s a pretty good place to take time off. Everyone can benefit from spending some time in nature, right? Looks like we all got a little worked up over nothing. Case closed.

But wait! Lies, mischief and deceit are ahead!

Yesterday, The State spotted Sanford at the Atlanta airport. Turns out he had spent the last seven days in Buenos Aires, Argentina because nothing supports your state's economy like vacationing in another country. Either the Gov’s staff completely lied to all of us or the Appalachian Trail stretches all the way to South America. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and go with the latter. That’s quite a hike a sir! Now get back to work rejecting money.

UPDATED: The governor was in Argentina to visit a woman. He will resign from the Republican Governor's Association. Watch the live press conference here
