When you
become a rock star like Oasis’s Noel Gallagher, you’re practically expected to
imbibe illegal substances. The English guitarist has confessed to loving every
minute of his former drug use—spending approximately 1 million pounds—until he quit
in 1998. Well duh!
What prompted him to make the blatantly honest statement was a question on the part of Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, asking him how he felt about “straight-edge” rock stars like Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Gallagher immediately responded with the statement: “I think he is an idiot. Doing drugs is the most beautiful thing about being in a rock band.”
The experienced Oasis macho went so far as to imply that only one type
of drug puts people in danger, stating, “While you use [drugs] - except for
heroin which kills people and which I have never tried - as you lot [Italians]
would say, ‘Mamma
Mia.’”
Additional reporting
shows Gallagher in opposition to a different type of rock star tendency—perhaps
one that makes a bit more sense. Regarding the live shows of Martin and U2’s Bono,
he says that political messages are repetitive and beside the point. Gallagher
speaks for those of us who are sick of hearing the same comments over and over
again at concerts: “At a U2
or Coldplay [show] there is
always a message about poor people or people dying from hunger. OK, but can't
we just have a nice evening? Do we always have to feel guilty?” [via NME and Corriere Della Sera].
