Real Uses for Plastic Bags

Re: Adam Janos's article on plastic bags ("Charging for Plastic," August 29, page 1) I see no mention of an obvious point: don't people use plastic bags to throw out their wet garbage? I certainly use the bags I get from the supermarket to put such garbage out and it is later gathered with other residents' bags into large black garbage bags and taken to the curb for pickup. If people don't get plastic bags from the supermarket etc. won't they simply have to buy commercially available plastic garbage bags? I never throw away a plastic bag I receive, I use them for some other purpose. It's hard to see where the environmental improvement is going to come from by requiring me to purchase the plastic bag.
